Year 2
Class Teacher: Miss Moxey
Class LSA: Mrs Belton
Term Two
Our value this term is respect.
Term 2 Overview of Learning
Our enquiry is: What helps living things grow and thrive?
This term we are going to have lots of fun investigating the question ‘What helps living things grow and thrive?’ First we will look at what we need to stay healthy. We will investigate the effect exercise has on our body, and we will look at the importance of good hygiene. We will also learn about food groups. We will then have the opportunity to grow some plants to help us to investigate what living things need to survive. Later in the term, we will consider what a habitat is. This will involve looking at a range of habitats, including deserts and polar regions.
Maths
In Term 2, we will start by adding numbers to ten to ensure knowledge of number bonds within ten. We will practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s before moving on to counting in 3s. We will use the commutative law and related facts to add and subtract, and we will focus on the number bonds of 10, 20 and 100. Later in the term, we will practise finding 1 more and 1 less than a given number before moving on to 10 more and 10 less. Towards the end of the term, we will learn to tell the time and analyse statistics.
English Writing
In English, children will look at the features of non-fiction texts and then write their own bug fact file using these non-fiction features such as subheadings, headings and pictures. The children will continue to add conjunctions and expanded noun phrases to improve and extend their writing. We will then use conjunctions and expanded noun phrases to write a story for entertainment based on the text The secret sky garden.
R.E
In R.E we discuss what it means to belong, through discussions about groups, clubs, families and religions and how these are important in our everyday lives.
Science
Our science topic for these next two terms will be ‘Animals, including humans’ and ‘ living things and their habitats’. We will be answering our learning enquiry questions through a range of investigations, where we will also learn how to observe closely, classify information and gather and record data.
PSHE
This term’s unit is ‘Celebrating Differences’. First we will consider similarities, assumptions and stereotypes that people may face. We will then discuss the importance of being different and celebrate it. Children will understand what is right and wrong and know how to look after themselves.

Term 1 Overview of Learning
Our enquiry is: What helps living things grow and thrive?
This term, we're going to have lots of fun exploring the question: What helps living things grow and thrive?
We'll begin by learning about what humans need to stay healthy. This includes investigating the effects of exercise on our bodies, understanding the importance of good hygiene, and learning about different food groups and how they help us.
Next, we'll get hands-on by growing our own plants, giving us the chance to explore what living things need in order to survive.
Later in the term, we'll dive into the concept of habitats. We'll discover the features of different habitats—such as deserts and polar regions—and learn how animals and plants are suited to live there.
Maths
In Term 1, we’ll be diving into place value!
We’ll begin by exploring how numbers are made up of tens and ones (for example, 28 is made up of 2 tens and 8 ones). We’ll practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and later in the term, we’ll challenge ourselves by counting in 3s too.
We'll use the commutative law and related facts to help us with addition and subtraction, and we'll focus on mastering number bonds to 10, 20, and 100.
As our understanding grows, we'll practise finding 1 more and 1 less than a given number, before moving on to 10 more and 10 less. We’ll also compare 2-digit numbers using mathematical language such as more than, less than, and equal to.
What a busy and exciting start to the year!
English Writing
This term, our writing will be inspired by Pip and Egg by Alex Latimer.
We will focus on writing to entertain by either creating a simple retelling of the story or imagining Pip’s story—what might have happened while Egg was away? We will also explore writing to inform by writing a recount in the form of Egg’s diary, describing key events from the story.
Throughout the term, we will develop our grammar skills, including:
-
Using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions
-
Writing with expanded noun phrases to add interest and detail
-
Using progressive verb forms to show ongoing action
We’ll practise planning and writing stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. We’ll also describe settings and events using descriptive language, adverbs for time, and the 5Ws (Who? What? When? Where? Why?).
It’s going to be a creative and exciting term full of storytelling and imaginative writing!
R.E- what does it mean to belong?
We will discuss what it means to belong by thinking about the different groups we are part of—such as families, clubs, and communities. We will also learn about how belonging to a religion can be important in people’s lives, and how it helps shape their values, traditions, and sense of identity.
Through stories, discussions, and activities, we’ll reflect on how being part of something can make us feel valued, supported, and connected.
P.E
P.E. will take place on ___________
Please ensure your child brings their P.E. kit in a named bag each week.
P.E. kit should include:
Black shorts, trousers, or skorts, A white Berrow logo t-shirt or a plain white t-shirt, Black or white trainers
PSHE
We’ll begin by thinking about our hopes and goals for the year ahead. We’ll explore how we can help ourselves and others feel a sense of belonging in our class and school community.
As the term progresses, we will talk about how to make our classroom a safe, fair, and respectful place for everyone. We'll also learn about the importance of working cooperatively and how our choices and behaviour can have an impact on others.
Through discussion and reflection, we’ll build a stronger understanding of ourselves and our responsibilities as part of a team.
